The Problem

The #1 challenge faced by boutique fitness studios is often customer acquisition. The very large majority of studios and class times are often operating under capacity and the incremental cost of serving additional customers is minimal. Studios are therefore on an ongoing quest to attract more customers through the door and convert them into regular paying members.

My Solution

A platform where users can find exactly the workout they are looking for and allows gyms to promote themselves using personalization via location, interests, and class purchase & attendance history.

Research

Survey

I created a survey in which 14 people participated in:

“When visiting a studio/gym's site, what are the most important features you are looking for?”

The answers helped create a more concrete picture in regards to features needed, consequently narrowing the scope.

Competitor Analysis

Next, I wanted a better understanding of how potential customers were discovering gyms and studios. A comparison matrix was created in order to fully understand these system’s features and where there could be improvements.

User Personas

THE MOM-ON-THE_GO

Motivations: Jasmine is a young mom with a tight budget and a very busy schedule. She wants to quickly see the timetables and availability of studios and gyms. Jasmine enjoys trying new, fun workouts to keep her fitness regime exciting, but does not want to pay full price.

Goals: Jasmine wants to easily see the schedule and also if there are any deals the business is offering.

Frustrations: Not being able to see the full schedule and not being able to see the pricing on the app. This consequently leads to juggling having multiple platforms open, which is a frustration for her.

FITNESS FIEND

Motivations: Max is a fitness junkie who just moved to the city and is looking for new gyms/studios.

Goals: Max wants to easily see the location of the business, as he is new in town and getting around is more difficult. Class offerings and easily seeing the schedule are also important since he is looking for particular workout classes gyms are offering.

Frustrations: Not seeing the location or contact information right away. Having to open up another application or website to see the full schedule or location of the business.

User Flows

I created two user flows, one for an established user, and one for a new user. The main purpose was to differentiate where I could use previously stored data and personalization for better recommendations, resulting in a better overall experience. It was also important to see where there were opportunities to push the new user to sign up.

New User

Wireframes

Next, I blocked out the wireframes in Figma. I wanted a clean, intuitive experience, guiding the user to want to keep exploring, through colorful buttons, interactive carousels, and maps. Having large, quality imagery and visuals alongside the information hierarchy was also important to include in the design.

Mobile

Branding

I wanted the branding name to be easy to remember. I chose bright, energetic colors to compliment the fitness focus of the application.

Testing

After testing I came to these conclusions and incorporated them into my high fidelity frames:

  • Add a feature to make the map “sticky” via a checkbox

  • For the filter, precise price adjustment hard to action with just sliders. Having numbers as editable/input fields as well could potentially help out here.

  • Users expected price information range information on the cards

  • Adding sorting for reviews

  • Improving the checkout experience by having links towards the details posting for the class. In case people will be re-checking details on their booked session.
